4 Best Wool Yarns For Dryer Balls Reviewed

Doing your laundry is not fun, but, there is nothing better than wearing your favorite clothes right out of the dryer.

With enough dryer sheets, your clothes will stay friction-free and static-free. This way you can fold or use your laundry right away.

But, what if there was a better alternative to using expensive dryer sheets?

Don’t get me wrong, I love dryer sheets. But the cost of them can stack up at the end of the year. Besides, the chemicals on your dryer sheets can be harmful to you and the environment.

Of course, we all want our laundry to be easy to handle after we dry it. Yet, there is a better and less expensive alternative to dryer sheets. And, you can make them on your own!

Dryer balls are made out of yarn and they don’t contain the chemicals found in dryer sheets. You can make them in your house and they don’t require a lot of skill to make.

In this post, I’ll show you the best wool yarn for dryer balls. I’ll also talk about how you can make these balls for your dryer yourself.

This way your clothes don’t stick together and they can dry faster!

The first yarn product I will introduce is Baby Alpaca yarn . This product is one-hundred percent natural wool and perfect for wool dryer balls.

In addition, this product comes in a pack. You can get a more lightweight yarn with three yarn balls. Or you can get the more bulky yarn with three yarn balls.

Either option is appropriate for this project. And the quality of this yarn is unmatched. You also get tons of different color options to choose from!

PROS:

  • Great quality yarn made from natural wool
  • Ethically sourced and high-quality product
  • Thick and soft yarn that is good for dryer balls

CONS:

  • Could be a little pricy for some people
  • You have to hand wash this yarn

Sugar Bush yarn  is a little cheaper and offers just as many color options. This yarn is natural and comes in all sorts of colors and shades.

Unlike the Baby Alpaca yarn, though, this yarn does not come in a pack. So, you might have to buy a few of these to make all your dryer balls.

Still, this is a high-quality product that is soft to the touch and ideal for your DIY project.

PROS:

  • Very high-quality yarn product that will last a long time
  • Comes in a lot of different colors and shades
  • Soft and natural wool that is good for the environment

CONS:

Alpaca Skeins yarn   comes from the Alpaca Warehouse. This is another high-quality product that has a lot to offer buyers. And, it comes with a lot of different options and colors.

However, I would only recommend getting the chunky/bulky version of this yarn. The lace and worsted yarns are soft and good for knitting.

But they are too thin. So, it will take much longer to wrap your yarn balls with these two versions of the product.

Other than this, Alpaca Skeins give you a lot of wool for a good price. This wool is luxurious and has some of the best texture for dryer balls.

So, definitely consider going with this particular yarn for your project!

PROS:

  • Comes in tons of different colors
  • Nice thick yarn options that are good for your dyer call
  • High-quality yarn that won’t fall apart
  • Is sourced from Peru and is all natural

CONS:

  • Some versions of the product are too thin for dyer balls
  • Could be a little expensive for some people

The final yarn product I will talk about is Knit Pick . Knit pick is a budget-friendly option and can help you save money on your dryer balls.

You still get good quality yarn with this product. But it is much cheaper than the other yarn I have listed.

There are fewer color options and this yarn is not as soft or luxurious as other yarns. But this is a sturdy option if you need to make dryer balls cheaply and quickly!

PROS:

  • Very affordable price for yarn
  • Has a good array of color options
  • Woolen yarn that is natural and very sturdy

CONS:

  • You do not get a ton of yarn with this product though
  • Fewer color options than other products I talked about
  • Not as luxurious as other yarn options

What to Consider When Buying Your Yarn For Dryer Balls

There are many factors to consider when buying yarn for your dryer balls. I talk about these factors here this way you can get the best possible yarn for this DIY project!

First off, you want to consider the price of your woolen yarn. The price might not be an issue for some people, but if you are looking to save money you want to get something that fits your budget.

Still, even if you go with cheaper yarns, don’t get something that is low quality. You want a yarn that is machine washable and thick. This way your wool balls will be able to be used over and over again in your dryer!

Other considerations include the texture of your yarn. Something smooth will yield the best results for your laundry. You don’t want a yarn that is rough because this could actually bring harm to your clothes.

In addition, think about your green footprint as you buy your yarn. You want to get something that is natural and ethically harvested. Luckily, every yarn product in this post meets these requirements.

So, you should not have any trouble making your dyer balls with my recommendations!

How to Make Your Own Homemade Wool Dryer Balls

Video: “HOW TO MAKE DRYER BALLS – Step by step tutorial with variations”

1

Get Your Materials

Make sure that you have everything you need before you begin the process of making your dryer balls.

Again, pure wool is recommended for this project. So I wouldn’t go with any other type of yarn.

Next, you will need some cotton string, some pantyhose, or some worn socks if you have them. And then some hot water.

2

Create Your Yarn Ball

It’s not hard to do this step but it will take time. Get your yarn, and begin carefully wrapping it around two of your fingers. Wrap it a few times, then once you have a small loop take it off your fingers.

Wrap yarn in the middle of the loop then start to wrap the yarn in all directions to start forming your ball.

This will take a little bit of patience, but you want to end up with a pretty big ball. It should be around the size of a tennis ball.

3

Make More Balls

Make as many balls as you want, I would say around two to three.

Then tie off the balls and make sure they won’t come loose. After this, you can put the balls into your sock or pantyhose.

4

Soak Your Dryer Ball

After your balls are wrapped in pantyhose or socks, you can begin soaking them. Soaking the dryer balls will help them keep their shape and soft texture.

You will need to put them in a boiling pot of water. But make sure to turn off your burner once you put the balls in.

You just want to soak them until the water in the pot goes cold. The balls will shrink a little but this is normal.

5

Dry Your Balls and Rewrap Them

Next, you will have to dry your balls. Let them dry out completely, you can even put them in your dryer.

But, this will not be the last step, you actually need to wrap your balls with more yarn. The balls you made will act as a core for your project.

So, wrap a little more yarn around the cores, then put them back in a boiling pot of water.

6

Finish Up

Dry your balls, and make sure they are the size you want them to be.

If they are a little smaller than you expected, you can wrap more yarn and redo the boiling and drying process again!
