While some may use traditional cotton rags, wipes and paper towels to clean a wide range of surfaces, microfiber cloths are actually the better option.
They mostly come from ultra thin polyester threads in combination with polyamide, which ‘effortlessly’ collect dirt and water. Polyester forms the towel structure, while polyamide creates more density and allows the towel to absorb better. Considering that polyester is cheaper than polyamide, in modern microfiber manufacturing, the blend ratio of the two materials are listed as 70/30 and 80/20 respectively.
Microfiber is usually woven, which means it contains a web of hook-like claws. These claws are the reason microfiber is so good at trapping particles, removing dirt and absorbing liquid. Based on its weave types, microfiber is divided into:
- Microfiber terry towel: knitted with terry loops
- Microfiber coral fleece towel: fuzzy textured and high piled
- Microfiber waffle weave towel: waffle patterned cloth
- Microfiber suede towel: flat textured with no pile
- Dual pile microfiber towel: one side of standard terry loops, the other side of extra long terry loops
- Microfiber pearl towel: tightly woven with short naps
- Microfiber glass towel: one ribbed, tightly woven side and a silky smooth texture on the other side
- Microfiber twisted terry towel: terry loop knits with longer pile.
Despite the different weave types, microfiber generally has the following qualities:
- Highly absorbent: some can even absorb liquid six times its size
- Strong and durable: some can be used over 300 times
- Light weight, easy to carry around, wrinkle free
- Cost efficient
- Effective dirt remover
Although all microfibers may share similar characteristics, there is some quality difference among the brands. In addition, there are also some microfiber cloths, which are specifically designed to clean off some certain surfaces. Some the best microfiber cloths in the market are as follows:
